My wife and I are driving down to the South of France and have planned a two day visit to Monte Carlo and want to splash out with a night at the Casino.
Our problem is that we have to pack for two weeks into a very small boot so we can't really afford the space to pack our glad-rags just for one night.
The official website doesn't go into anything specific about dress code, has anyone been? We want to go to the 'proper' Casino rather than the 'American-style' one which is more relaxed.
I stopped off at the Casino two years ago. I am not a gambler and didnt really want to pay for a "group tour". The facility was very restricted and controlled.
One is not allowed to wander in off the street and enter the Casino--nor can you casually walk into the hotel across the plaza.
The Casino, like the Hotel and the nearby shopping mall which had 2 Rembrants and a Monet for sale were definitely exclusive.
The main casino in Casino Square is I presume the one you want to visit. I think the admission was 10 euros for the general areas.
Minimums on the tables are variable but started at 5 euros on some. On the night we were there Bono was playing the same cheap table we were! I suppose if your that polotically correct it wouldn't do to be seen as a high roller.
We stayed in Nice and drove out to Monte Carlo to check out the "playground for the rich and famous". It was absolutely pathetic.
It costs 10 euros to get in don't forget your passport. There are a few rooms in the casino which was built in the mid 19th century.
I doubt the Grimaldis have made an effort to renovate in since the day they built it. I made my husband bring a suit all the way from SF in order to comply with the "dress code" and I wore a cocktail dress.
Well, let's just say we were the only ones dressed up. I've seen people in jeans, casual shirts and shoes.
My first trip to Monte Carlo casino was more that 40 years ago- everyone dressed then for everything. Two years ago I took my sons for his 21st birthday.
I had heard the same information as you have and made him wear a coat and tie. I think part of the confusion is that there are two different areas to gamble in.
One has nothing but slot machines. Is outside the actual "Grand Casino" itself- as you are facing the casino from the square in front of it the slot machine area is to the left.
There are a few cafes in and around it. This portion of the casino definitely does not have a dress code. If you want to enter the "Grand Casino" itself there is an entry fee charged at least for those of us that are "commoners" I guess.
There were men in coat and tie, some with coat and jeans, and others without coats at all. The "heavy" gamblers were known by the staff and we had a great deal of fun and entertainment just watching them.
Inside there is another room just for slots and even private slot rooms for the "heavy" players. I am sure there are other private gambling rooms that we never saw but after watching some of the action at the tables we saw I can't imagine what it takes to get in to them.
Were we out of place? We obviously weren't there to gamble heavily. We went to see the place it is gorgeous and experience it.
Did we have a good time? My son did not feel out of place in his coat and tie. You could always remove your tie if you felt un-comfortable.
We just took the amount we were happy to spend on the evenings entertainment and enjoyed ourselves! Also many of the popular bars and restaurants like the american bar in the hotel de paris require you to wear a coat and tie.
So i suggest you take some formal clothes. We were there in April and my husband wore a coat and tie for lunch at Louis XV and the casino. The cost is 10 euros per person to enter the main casino, and it was well worth it.
I agree with previous posters about the casino requirements, so I guess it depends on whether you want to go inside and look at the high rollers.
Look at it this way, i'ts never a waste of time to pack a jacket and tie for Monte Carlo , it's such a glamorous location it's a shame not to dress up.
